9. Live Theatre

Theme 46:  Tell A StoryIMG_2980

Shooting live theatre is difficult, to say the least.  You cannot use a flash; most of the time, you really don’t know the blocking of the show, so entrances and exits can come as a surprise; the actors are moving; you cannot stop and pose them; make sure their eyes are open and they’re not making a funny face.  My goal as a theatre photographer is to capture the emotion of the scene.

The photos below are from a production that opens this weekend in Atlantic Beach, Black Pearl Sings.

IMG_2990Black Pearl Sings, a play set during the Great Depression, follows two dramatically diverse women on their quests to obtain their portion of one of life’s Happy Endings. Susannah, a white researcher from the Library of Congress, is on a journey to immortalize the musical hymns sung “’round the days of slavery” in order to secure a position with an Ivy League College- but only if she stumbles upon a song old enough to solidify her worth. Pearl is a prisoner in a Texas facility, who when her daughter comes up missing, devises a plan to sing her way into Susannah ‘s life by trading fragments of her musical heritage for a ticket to freedom in order to search for her one and only daughter.

7. You Can’t See Me

Theme 18.  Hidden from View

This morning, my cat, Durdles, was hiding in long grass.  While the requirements of the show have kept me from my camera, I couldn’t help but think of the Hidden from View theme.  She thought she was hidden from view, LOL.

Taken with a Canon D70, cropped.

6. French Quarter in Black and White

Theme 13. Downtown in B&W.

New Orleans, specifically the French Quarter, lends itself to black and white.  Take the people out of the photo and you step back in time.

5. Trapped

Theme #4: Biggest Fear.  This one had me stumped as I was wondering, “How do you photograph claustrophobia or being trapped…. by fire, by locked doors, by water, whatever.”  Then I walked out my front door and saw the sun glinting off this spiderweb and thought, “That’s trapped.”  The web isn’t perfect, but don’t tell that to a fly.

4. Surround Sound

Theme 14: Enclose.  To surround (something); to put something around (something).

At rehearsal this past week, our director kindly brought all of us a beer.  My cast mate set hers down on the stage so she could sing; I glanced down and my brain immediately went into photography mode.

Taken with my iPhone 6; edited to blur the edges.

3. Alpha and Meta

If animals could speak, the dog would be a blundering outspoken fellow, but the cat would have the rare grace of never saying a word too much.                Mark Twain

The first photo I took of her after drying her off from the rain.

On a rainy Friday night, I heard a plaintive wail coming from my back yard.  The sound was coming from this little 6 day old kitten.

We embarked on a 4-week journey of bottle feeding and pottying.

Love the colors in this photo. A heat lamp was providing the light in her carrier while keeping her warm.

She went to work with me everyday, entertaining everyone with her antics.

Her “calendar girl” pose. She loved that Puffs box.

She is now the alpha 4-legged personality in the house, ruling over both dogs.

Her personality captured.

She’s 23 months old and has grown into a beautiful cat.

Such intense creatures.

Her name is Durdles, but often she is called Brat Cat.

Always looking for what is next.

After losing my cat who held my heart, I wanted another dog, not a cat.  Within days, I was notified of a black lab mix litter.  I told the lady at the rescue that the pup must be black and white and must be female.  Her answer, “One of the pups is.”

8 weeks old and already looking me in the eyes. Even then, I knew her soul was old.

I met the pup when I picked her up to bring her home.  She was 8 weeks old.  I was stunned because she had very, very similar markings to my “heart cat.”

One of my favorite puppy photos, laying on the back porch with my other dog. A rare moment of stillness.

I named her Dakotah, which means friend or ally.

She climbed up on the bags by herself. Still surprised Science Diet didn’t pick up the photo for advertising.

She soon captured my heart, connecting to me similar to my former cat.

She came running out of the lake. Love the energy!

She has titled in dock diving, learned some agility and frisbee.  A constant companion, often going to work with me.

Climbing up so she can see better. Probably looking for her Aunt Teri.

She didn’t grow as much as anticipated, and she soon came to be known as “Midget.”

Old soul.

Dakotah of my Heart.

2. An Avid Reader is Called a “Book ____.”

Sum It Up

I know that books seem like the ultimate thing that’s made by one person, but that’s not true. Every reading of a book is a collaboration between the reader and the writer who are making the story up together.  (John Green)

A book is a gift you can open again and again.

1. A Part of Me

“The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other’s life. Rarely do members of one family grow up under the same roof.”   Richard Bach, Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah

The Universe blessed me with 2 sisters by love, and what a joy to see my nephew celebrate 7!

A happy boy, chocolate and all!

Digging for presents!

Best place to be on a hot summer afternoon.
